Cost-cutting measures appear to have been initiated for The Star Entertainment Group, as reports revealed the Australian casino operator will be shutting its corporate office and handing management responsibilities to its three casino resorts.
The Australian Financial Review has reported that Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Bruce Mathieson Jnr recently emailed staff to highlight the future direction of The Star.
Mathieson Jnr reportedly said in the memo: “It is our intent to close the corporate office in its current form. Some tough decisions must be made. We must act. We must seize the moment in order to build a stronger and sustainable Star.”
The number of jobs that would be cut as a result of the redundancies was not made clear, but some management roles are expected to be moved to The Star’s three resorts in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sydney to localise responsibilities.
Adjustments for The Star come as a carousel of changes takes place at the Australian operator, following the completion of an AUD $300m strategic investment from Bally’s Corporation and Investment Holdings.
Over the past few months, Anne Ward has stood down as Chair of the board, while Steve McCann has left his role as Group CEO and Managing Director, with Mathieson Jnr taking on McCann’s responsibilities.
Before the close of 2025, The Star also announced the exits of Group Chief Financial Officer Frank Krile and Group Chief Operating Officer Jeannie Mok, with the latter leaving at the end of this month. Mathieson Jnr’s email was reportedly sent out on the same day as this announcement.
The email continued: “The corporate office has added complexity rather than value and simplification. We must get closer to our customers and to your front-line team. And we have to meet the regulatory imperative to decentralise the business and empower our property teams.”
