Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Dutch gambling authority, has informed the organisers of the upcoming Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix weekend that no gambling sponsorship can be displayed at the event in Zandvoort.
In a statement, the KSA made it clear that no advertisements from gambling providers can be visible at the race next weekend, 29-31 August, even if said operator or supplier is licensed in their own country.
Several Formula 1 teams have gambling partnerships, including Sauber with Stake, McLaren with Allwyn, Ferrari with VGW Play, Alpine with Modo, Haas with Play’n GO and Williams with Betway.
“It is strictly prohibited to display advertising or other visible advertisements from gambling providers without a Dutch license,” the authority stated.
“Such advertisements from unlicensed providers constitute promotion of illegal gambling. This violates applicable law. Licensed providers are prohibited from advertising online gambling.”
The Dutch gambling authority had issues with gambling sponsorship being visible during the race last year, as Sauber was ordered to remove its title sponsor, Stake, from its livery.
Previously, Sauber had removed its Stake sponsorship for some races and replaced it with the streaming platform Kick. The team recently used the Kick branding during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend at the end of July.
The future of gambling sponsorship was a point of discussion on a recent episode of iGaming Daily, as Christian Lee, Business Journalist for iGaming Expert and Kieran O’Connor, Business Journalist for Insider Sport, discussed its future within football with Fernando Noodt Molins, Media Manager for SBC.
O’Connor said: “In countries with bans, when the big teams compete in the larger stage like the UEFA Champions League, you have teams with betting sponsorship coming over to your country. So it definitely creates an issue for regulators that are trying to keep the betting brands off screen.”
