Botswana has stepped up its regulatory leadership obligations with the appointment of Moruntshi Kemorwale as the substantive Chief Executive Officer of the Botswana Gambling Authority.
Kemorwale will take the region into a new era, having been a steady hand for the market over the past 11 months, in a caretaker role.
The former Chief of Staff has been a mainstay with the board and has served in several leadership roles including leading strategic planning, organisational performance monitoring, gaming stakeholder engagements and programmes that support responsible gambling across the country.
Honourable Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Tiroeaone Ntsima conferred Moruntshi with the new role while members of the board joined in congratulating expressed excitement over the leadership.
Chairperson of the board, Plato Gaoboi showered encomiums on the new CEO, commenting: “The Board is confident that Mr. Kemorwale’s institutional knowledge, strategic acumen, and commitment to responsible gambling will steer the Authority toward greater impact. We congratulate him on this appointment and look forward to working with him as we strengthen regulation and stakeholder trust.”
Under Kemorwale’s guidance, the board continue to roll out player protection measures and stricter regulations over illegal and online gaming, following a significant surge in gambling engagement, with Botswana often touted as the next key emerging market in Africa.
With a 10% levy on operators, Botswana’s taxation policies are viewed as very lenient, making it an attractive opportunity for global operators that are looking for entry into Africa.
The board has already swung into action and recently organized a responsible gambling mobile clinic at Tsabong Mall yesterday, extending invitation to the public to come and ask questions relating to responsible gaming and the risks of gambling-related harm.
