Google has issued two back-to-back policy updates that will directly impact the marketing and visibility of real-money and sweepstakes-style gaming products across all markets.
On 28 October 2025, Google updated its Gambling & Games advertising policy to state:
“Examples of games that aren’t social casino games: Sweepstake casinos.”
In its official clarification, Google added:
“Games that fall under the umbrella of real-world rewards are subject to the exact limitations and allowances of the online gambling policy.”

The revision removes the option for sweepstake-model casinos including those using dual-currency systems such as Gold Coins for play and Sweeps Coins redeemable for prizes, to advertise under Google’s lighter social casino certification.
These products will now be treated under the stricter online gambling remit, which requires operator licensing, country-specific certification, and responsible gambling messaging.
For North American audiences, where sweepstakes are viewed as ‘regulatory grey area’, the reclassification will likely render them ineligible for Google Ads marketing unless full gambling licences are obtained.
Affiliates and media partners promoting such products must now comply with the same advertising standards as licensed gambling operators or risk account suspension.
Play Console adopts mandatory age blocking
Two days later, on 30 October 2025, Google announced the launch of a new Age-Restricted Content and Functionality policy in its Play Console, introducing stricter child-protection measures for Android developers. The policy notice states:
“You will have at least 30 days from October 30 2025 to update your app to follow the new and updated policy changes.”
The update adds “To help protect children, the new policy requires apps with features that include matchmaking, dating, or real-money gambling/games/contests to use Play Console features to block minors.”

Developers have until late November to integrate Google’s age-screening tools, ahead of full enforcement on 28 January 2026. Apps that fail to comply risk removal or suspension from Google Play.
Tougher oversight on gambling content
Together, these measures represent Google updating its stringent stance once more gaming content. Sweepstake operators lose their former “free-to-play” advertising route, while app developers must demonstrate platform-level compliance with child-protection rules.
Industry analysts view the twin updates as part of a wider global alignment: Google’s advertising and distribution arms are now operating under parallel rules that reflect local licensing, responsible gambling, and age-verification standards.
