While Kalamba Games certainly aims to provide innovation and flair in slot development, with the launch of 3×3 reel games, the studio is embracing simplicity. As these games hit the casino lobbies, iGaming Expert sits down with Piotr Simon, Lead Game Producer at Kalamba Games, to explore the thinking behind this series and why streamlined mechanics are winning over players.
iGaming Expert: 3×3 games bring a clean, minimalist feel to Kalamba’s portfolio. What inspired that creative choice?

Piotr Simon: We’ve always been passionate about pushing boundaries, but we also listen closely to player behaviour. The small grid format was borne from a desire to create games with a super low barrier to entry – titles that are instantly understandable, visually clean and mechanically intuitive.
These games target a specific audience that values fast-paced action and straightforward gameplay, including a classic approach to bonus rounds. It’s about accessibility without sacrificing engagement.
iGX: What makes the 3×3 format so effective in terms of player retention and conversion?
PS: It’s a combination of factors. The 3×3 grid is inherently familiar – it evokes classic slot machines while allowing us to layer in modern features. What’s really striking is the number of spins per player. Bounce rates are also extremely low therefore engagement levels are exceptionally high. Players stick around because the games are easy to grasp and consistently entertaining.
iGX: Let’s talk about mechanics. The PrizeTower feature seems to be a standout. Can you explain how it works?
PS: Absolutely. The PrizeTower is a central mechanic built around chasing cashpots. It usually consists of seven tiers, each representing a potential win level. Hit the required number of symbols for any of the levels and you get an instant win.
It’s simple, gives a continuous thrill to boost session length and, of course, fun for the player.
iGX: You mentioned “near win” scenarios. How do those play into the overall experience?
PS: Near wins are a powerful psychological tool. We’ve packed the 3×3 Series with action – animations, sound cues, and visual effects that simulate the feeling of just missing a big win. It’s not about frustration; it’s about excitement and anticipation.
These moments create emotional peaks that drive continued play. The games feel alive, even when the reels aren’t landing jackpots.
iGX: The symbol set is quite minimal – BARs, Sevens, Cashpot, Bonus. Why go so lean?
PS: Like I say, it’s all about clarity. A reduced symbol set means players can instantly recognise what’s happening on the reels. But we’ve spiced things up with a variety of multipliers, so even familiar symbols can deliver unexpected outcomes.
iGX: There’s been talk about “perceived persistence” in slot design. Is that something you considered for this series?
PS: It’s a concept we’ve explored, though it’s not front and centre in our 3×3 reel games. The games do create a sense of progression – through the PrizeTower, bonus triggers and visual feedback – but we’ve focused more on immediate clarity and action than long-term persistence.
That said, the feeling of building toward something is definitely present but more explored in other titles within our portfolio.
iGX: Final thoughts – what’s the biggest takeaway for operators and players?
PS: Simplicity doesn’t mean compromise. 3×3 reel games proves that you can deliver high engagement, strong conversion and repeat play with a clean design and focused mechanics. It’s a testament to how well-targeted experiences can outperform even the most complex setups. We’re excited to see how this series continues to evolve.
